Future prospects are far from rosy with the jobless total passing the 12 million mark in the Community in 1982. Will the combined efforts of the Member States and the European Community be up to the demands of the situation?

Summary

The purpose of the Ispra-Courses Seminar held in November 1985 and of this book, which contains most of the material presented on that occasion, is first to provide readers with some general principles and then to expose them to a broad spectrum of applications so that they may come to appreciate the similarities and differences in the approaches taken. In each case an explanation of the physical nature of the particular multiphase flow application is followed by a presentation of the model adopted, emphasizing its distinguishing features. The technique employed for the numerical solution is then discussed, usually supported by numerical results.

Summary

The Workshop on "Biological Assessment of Occupational Exposure to Actinides" which took place in Versailles, France, May 30-June 2, 1988 was organised jointly by the Radiation Protection Programme of the Commission of the European Communities, the Commissariat a l'Énergie Atomique, Departement de Protection Sanitaire, Fontenay-aux-Roses and the Office of Health and Environmental Reasearch, United States Department of Energy. In general, biokinetic data and occupational exposure limits for radionuclides recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection have been derived for pure compounds. However, workers in the nuclear industry may be exposed to actinides in a wide range of chemical forms, often in association with other radioactive or inactive materials. This can substantially influence their retention characteristics in the lung, gut and other tissues. In these circumstances procedures are needed for assessing the radiological consequences of exposure, for deriving suitable limits on intake and for interpreting whole body monitoring and bioassay data. This is an area of work in which the sponsoring bodies have been increasingly involved in recent years. The Workshop brought together scientists concerned with improving and implementing radiation protection standards and with the assessment of occupational exposure. The proceedings comprehensively cover practical problems related to potential sources of exposure to uranium, plutonium and the higher actinides. Emphasis is placed on applying the results of experimental measurements in the development of site or material specific limits on intake and for assessing the toxicity of actinides. Attention is given to the development of dosimetric models and includes reports on the ICRP Task Group on lung modelling and the Task Group set up by the USDOE Office of Health and Environmental Research on modelling and scaling to man. Also included are reports on work related to the management of persons accidentally exposed to actinides and on the analysis of autopsy tissues for improving the interpretation of bioassay data and the results of whole body monitoring. A summary of a round table discussion, held at the conclusion of the Workshop, is included in these proceedings. It reviews the main conclusions of the meeting and identifies areas where further work is required. These proceedings should be of particular value to occupational health physicists, to scientists involved in radiation protection related research and to persons concerned with establishing protection standards for the nuclear industry.
