European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, [2020], c2020.
    Summary

European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, [2020], c2020.
    Summary

European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, [2020], c2020.
    Summary

Privilege or necessity? : the working lives of people with multiple jobs. European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, [2020], c2020.
    Summary
Although a small proportion of the EU workforce holds down more than one job, it is worth understanding the phenomenon better, not only because it is growing by degrees, but also because of the impact it can have on workers’ health and well-being and what it can tell us about the labour market. While there can be positive facets to multiple-job holding – it can, for example, be a stepping stone for career development – it can also have undesirable consequences for workers’ physical and mental health if it entails very long working hours and poor work–life balance. This policy brief examines the prevalence of multiple-job holding in the EU, its main characteristics and the job quality of the workers who do it. One of the main findings is that multiple-job holding is different for women and men, and also varies significantly with age and income.

Telework and ICT-based mobile work : flexible working in the digital age. European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, 2020.
    Summary
Advances in ICT have opened the door to new ways of organising work. We are shifting from a regular, bureaucratic and ‘factory-based’ working time pattern towards a more flexible model of work. Telework and ICT-based mobile work (TICTM) has emerged in this transition, giving workers and employers the ability to adapt the time and location of work to their needs. Despite the flexibility and higher level of worker autonomy inherent in TICTM, there are risks that this work arrangement leads to the deterioration of work–life balance, higher stress levels and failing worker health. This report analyses the employment and working conditions of workers with TICTM arrangements, focusing on how it affects their work–life balance, health, performance and job prospects. While policymakers in many EU countries are debating TICTM and its implications, the study finds that only a few have implemented new regulations to prevent TICTM from having a negative impact on the well-being of workers.

Working time in 2017–2018 [er]. European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, 2019.
    Summary
This biennial review charts developments in a range of working time issues in the EU and Norway in 2017–2018. It finds that while the average collectively agreed working week across the EU remains unchanged since 2016 – at 38 hours – there was a slight decrease in the past two years in the 15 Member States that joined the EU before 2004 (the EU15). The banking sector continues to have the shortest average agreed normal working week, and the retail sector the longest. In 2018, collectively agreed paid annual leave entitlement stood at an average of 23.8 days across the EU – slightly higher in the EU15 and considerably lower in the rest of the EU. From an annual perspective, according to collectively agreed, normal annual working hours, full-time workers in the EU28 worked, on average, 1,714 hours in 2018: 1,687 hours in the EU15 and 1,803 hours in the other Member States.

Working conditions in a global perspective [er]. European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
    Publication
    Luxembourg : Publications Office, 2019.
Geneva : International Labour Organization, 2019.
    Summary
Job quality is a major focus of policymakers around the world. For workers, the enterprises that employ them and for societies, there are benefits associated with high-quality jobs, and costs associated with poor-quality jobs. This report – the result of a pioneering project by the International Labour Organization and Eurofound – provides a comparative analysis of job quality covering approximately 1.2 billion workers in Europe, Asia and the Americas. It analyses seven dimensions of job quality: the physical environment, work intensity, working time quality, the social environment, skills and development, prospects, and earnings, finding both important differences and similarities between countries. By analysing positive and negative aspects of job quality in different countries and societies, the report provides a way to look beyond national explanations, to see how some groups of workers are affected more than others and understand the particular issues for women workers around the world – in support of evidence-based policymaking to improve job quality.
