    “The Many Faces of Translation” conference, organised by the Directorate General for Translation in November 2019 in Luxembourg, was our most ambitious yet. This compilation of articles by the speakers highlights the critical, diverse, and innovative role translation increasingly plays in today’s globalised world. Translation is evolving and branching off into new and exciting areas, and we in DG TRAD are proud to be adapting to this new reality. Our core business is to provide a top class multilingual service for the Members and staff of the European Parliament, and to connect our institution to the citizens it serves. To do this, we need to reach out in a language the citizens understand and in ways that are relevant to them. At the same time, we have to respond to the needs of the Members for new services, provided in new, modern ways. Indeed, our vision for the future is a dynamic, multi-channel, multilingual service responding to new needs for new products. As Europe changes, we want to renew and innovate to bring the European Parliament closer to its citizens. In this context, the translator’s profile is evolving from pure translation of texts towards a role as an intercultural and language professional. The ability to communicate with citizens in clear language is becoming more and more of a necessity, and new ways of working are emerging. We are now developing exciting new projects to transform the way Parliament communicates with its electorate. This is what we mean when we talk about “Citizens’ Language”. We are innovating and being pro-active so that we can play our full role, as the experts we are, in transforming content, be it between languages or within languages. We have moved a long way from the traditional domain of the “translator”. Now we work in text, audio and video, and are future-proofing our profession. We are demonstrating our relevance to those who would stereotype us as mere “language technicians” and ignore the true value that linguistic expertise can bring.
